The paper presents the study carried out to analyze the most influential factors of success and failure causes in projects. The key tool to gather perceptions on various factors and causes is a survey specifically conceived for project managers. As an innovative element, it has been distributed among professionals involved in project management through the professional networking site LinkedIn. Another aim of the study is to determine dependencies among the assessments of failure causes and success factors and other variables in order to prove the hypothesis of subjectivity supported by the available literature. Thus, in a first phase a statistical analysis is performed to try to find geographical or project type dependencies, the results of which are inconclusive. In a second analysis phase it is intended to detect behavioral patterns by using data mining techniques and clustering, concluding that in the population sample there are 9 clearly differentiated groups (clusters), which supports the hypothesis of subjectivity.
