Human resource management plays a key role in organizations, as it helps to have a motivated, trained and committed workforce. This management considers job enrichment and empowerment as strategies with influence on employee motivation and job satisfaction. Based on 34 semi-structured interviews to building engineer site managers in construction companies in Castilla-La Mancha, some components of these motivational strategies and their effects on job satisfaction are analyzed. Results show that both job enrichment and empowerment are conditioned by elements such as company size, site manager’s seniority, professional experience, management procedures, and the economic downturn, among others. Empowerment is neither a widespread strategy nor is it used as described in the literature. Furthermore, the job of the site manager has certain degree of autonomy, but having high workloads, it implies very long working days.
