One of the most significant actions to adapt our titles to the European Higher Education Area has been the establishment of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) as the measuring unit. The use of ECTS credit means that those responsible for a specified degree should be able to properly distribute the workload of the student through each training period. To do this it is necessary to have procedures that allow the real dedication required for each subject to be quantified, as opposed to the theoretical assigned to it in the study plan. The Technical University of Cartagena last academic year began developing a pilot program through the teaching staff of the Development of Teaching and Planning Guides adapted to the European Higher Education Area, to analyse the real workload of their students so that it can be used to improve horizontal coordination of their degrees. The aim of this paper is to present the results obtained during 2013/2014, in measuring the workload and its distribution, for different profiles of obligatory and optional subjects in related areas of knowledge in the field of engineering.
