The Ecuadorian island Santay, located on river Guayas 800 meters far from Guayaquil city, is a protected area because of its biodiversity, natural resources, beauty and historical and cultural value. It is also an important location for ecological tourism. Since the declaration as a Ramsar wetland, its conservation is of global interest, as its surrounding water provides the habitat for several species of animals and plants. The Project ¨Generation and restoration of green areas for Guayaquil city ¨, has given special attention to the island Santay and its community, building infrastructure for the development of tourism, as well as new eco-friendly dwellings for the 56 families that inhabit the island. This paper assesses the impact of the Project in the development and quality of life of the island´s population.
