Phytoextraction is a technology that allows the remediation of heavy metal-polluted soils by taking advantage of some plants capacity of extracting and translocating the metals to their harvestable parts. In spite the fact that this technique has shown a great deal of interest from the scientific community since the 1990´s, still has not reached the commercial domain for several reasons, especially due to the long periods required for remediation, and the difficulty to foresee such periods.
This communication shows a new methodology for predicting the evolution of heavy-metal content in soil during phytoextraction projects, that is based on a heuristic and qualitative model to establish the metal accumulation rate in plant, combined with a recursive algorithm that estimates metal concentration in soil to each harvest.
