The workload is one of the aspects that can significantly affect the academic results of university students. To avoid this, ANECA requires universities to develop tools to establish horizontal coordination of the subjects taught in each of the four-month periods of each degree.
The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has opted for the use of a joint schedule in which the activities to be carried out in each of the four-month periods of the degree are collected, with the objective of detecting specific workloads due to the concentration of activities in the same period of the four-month period. It is a useful tool, but it does not provide information on the actual distribution of the student's workload.
This paper presents a mathematical model that, based on the information introduced in the joint schedule, facilitates and improves horizontal coordination by quantitatively simulating the workload of students in each four-month period, thus allowing to optimize the distribution of the same modifying the dates defined for each of the activities. The model has been successfully applied in High Technique School the Industrial Engineering.
