Water is a vital resource and its demand globally keeps increasing . Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the population, especially in developing countries. Rainwater harvesting is one of the most viable alternatives, due to its low complexity.
This project proposes design and construction of a system for collection and storage of rainwater with low-cost materials, as well as a filter for the treatment of the water collected. The project describes the proposed design and the results of the tests performed at lab (with turbid water) or at field level (with real water) with the installation designed.
The results show that rainwater harvesting system is acceptable from the point of view of colleting capacity, and the filter is more effective when working at low filtration rates. These conclusions can be used as a guide to design a system at real scale and represent an alternative to open water intake or extraction from wells.
