The building sector is responsible for 40% of the final energy consumption in the European Union. Given this problem, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, transposed in all countries of the European Union, requires limitations on the energy consumption and energy demand of buildings. Energy demand is limited by reducing the thermal transmittance of the elements comprising the thermal envelope—specifically, increasing the thermal insulation thickness of the opaque elements. The objective of this work is to determine the optimal thermal insulation thickness of walls and roofs and to minimize both the total heating cost and the total heating and cooling cost of a newly constructed single-family dwelling in Logroño (Spain) by applying the life-cycle cost analysis method. The energy and environmental impact of this optimized thermal envelope is evaluated by thermal simulation with Unified Tool LIDER-CALENER. In addition, the work verifies compliance with the Basic Document of Energy Saving in Buildings of the Technical Building Code (CTE-DB-HE) and determines whether a nearly zero-energy building is achieved.
