In this work a spatial assessment of climatic conditions was made in order to determine where the use of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) is a more suitable alternative than the conventional heat pump. This GIS-based assessment has been applied at a national scale in Spain although it can be also applied both in smaller and bigger scales. The methodology is based on the assessment of the site-specific annual temperature amplitude that, unlike GSHP, affects heat pump´s performance. A study area was classified according to their temperature amplitude and mirror the level of suitability of using one technology compare to the other. Thematic maps have been created with the resulting data and aerial distribution and population effected statistics have been done.
This work has been developed with policy and energy decision makers and manufacturers in mind. For the former, results may support them in determining the most convenient technology depending on the location and how much population is affected as a way to obtain as environmental benefits as possible and set an evidence base feeding into energy polices. While for the latter, results may be of great help to define market size segmented by areas.
