According to United Nations data, currently half of the world's population lives in cities. In Europe this figure is higher. Cities are transformed to improve the performance and quality of urban services. In technologically developed countries, cities are moving towards the Smart City system, based mainly on wireless technologies and information systems. In terms of sustainable development, Smart City technology is an area to explore and to define. It is necessary to quantify its impact in order to objectify it and to generate new fields of action.
The objective of this work is to propose a methodology that allows identifying, evaluating and quantifying the environmental, economic and social impacts associated with a wireless sensor network, the main structure of the Smart Cities. It is developed in two phases: in the first one, the methodology for impact evaluation is developed and proposed. In the second one, this methodological proposal is applied to a real case and the results are discussed. It is concluded that advocating the establishment of technology in cities is the engine of change as long as the city is prepared to contribute in terms of management.
