The results of the quantitative and qualitative characterization study of the essential oil of jara pringosa, obtained in different municipalities in the Sierra Norte from Madrid, are presented. This study is part of an initial research project funded by IMIDRA, in collaboration with local corporations. As part of this work, a mechanized use of jara was carried out with the BIOBALER brushcutter-baler, on jaw masses in the age ranges of 2-4, 5-15 and over 15 years. The amount of biomass obtained, the yield in essential oil, was quantified and chromatographically characterized by CG-MS. Mechanized exploitation could be possible, without the need for breakage or seeding.
Weekly distillations of jaras between 2-4 years, fortnightly periods of 5–10 years, and monthly distillations of more than 15 years are being made. The yields are increasing and maximum in mid-November, with an average of 1ml / kg-MF in jaras of 2-4 years. The yields decrease with the age of the plant. The essential oil obtained from jaras over 15 years old is high in tails and low in heads. These works are to continue, to check the quantitative and qualitative stability of the essential oils obtained.
