Design for assembly methodologies (DFA) help designers to consider a product's assembly process from the initial stages of design. The most widespread DFA methodologies (Boothroyd-Dewhurst, Hitachi Assemblability method, Lucas) do not consider the first three phases of product development (specifications, conceptual design, and detailed design) while a new methodology called DFA-SPDP does.
This article aims to advance in the validation of the DFA-SPDP methodology as a methodology that considers the three phases of product development and to infer the contributions that this methodology makes with respect to a generic design methodology. For this purpose, the DFA-SPDP methodology is implemented in an academic case study, the transmission of a ball collection machine. Thus, a student from Mondragon Unibertsitatea in his bachelor thesis applies DFA-SPDP methodology in the transmission design and compares its results with the design that a group of students made by applying a generic design process without considering the assembly in a specific way. The comparison of the results shows that the DFA-SPDP methodology improves the assembly time by 40%. In addition, the characteristics of the design developed through this methodology promote the criteria of Circular Economy.
