From a project management perspective, new shipbuilding projects are characterized by low definition in their high budgets, a very long duration and clearly differentiated phases throughout their life cycle. These three features complicate the correct application of the conventional techniques of the Earned Value Management System (EVMS), This is why the need for new techniques to adapt this control system to the field of shipbuilding is identified.
In the present research, a series of techniques are introduced to improve the application of the earned value management system to this type of project, with the main objective of optimizing the estimates at the completion of the project, in terms of scheduling and cost, adapting to the different phases of the project, and to the variations that the project will undergo over time (changes in budget, deadline and requirements). Similarly, a set of indicators of deviations and performances are obtained, being useful in the monitoring and control, providing better information to project management, improving decision making.
