The urban agriculture is a task that is becoming more and more usual, due to the demographic growth of the cities, since it allows having foods and employment, and at the
same time it is potential source of business opportunities. The purpose of this communication is to outline the sustainability in the urban agriculture by means of the use of the hydroponics technology for the agricultural production. The diagnosis criteria and indicators of sustainability are determined through a methodology of documental investigation and interviews with experts, which make of the hydroponics an option to produce foods in reduced spaces. The results indicate that the urban agriculture for its space environment presents limited scale possibilities to evolve toward the formal market, but it can respond to the necessities of family self-consumption and the improvement of nutritional foods and of better quality.
