The difficulty of prevention theories existing to explain the tragic accidents during the years 70-80 (Tenerife airport, shuttle Challenger, Chernobyl, sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise, King's Cross fire, ...) have led to the need for new approaches to the prevention of accidents based on the Safety Culture and Human Factor (Human Reliability and Behavior-Based Safety). These approaches, together with current regulations and characteristics of each company are used as foundation for creating the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). The OHSMS certification according to a recognized standard (OHSAS, SCC) is an instrument that validates the effective risk
management in companies. In activities such as projects, which often used practice of contracting/subcontracting companies in the same workplace, the OHSMS certification has become a powerful tool to ensure the safety commitment from the contractor/subcontractor companies.
