A wire rod mill must execute orders from different customers, with different features, different priorities and different due dates, considering the physical constraints of the line itself. The volumes and features of the orders, as well as the line constraints vary from one mill to another, even in the same mill in different timeframes. Flexibility is not comparable to the other processes, due to the change of size here implies high time and quality loses, making difficult to run the mill under stable conditions.
This job develops a methodology of analysis and the needed mathematical models to, given a wire rod mill within its specific features and an order book, obtain the production schedule according to customer’s due dates minimizing the production cost, considering the customer’s priorities, priorities of the orders, physical constraints of the mill and the costs associated to potential delays or to stock generation.
The methodology, with general nature, is proven by its application to a wire rod mill.
