The originality of the climate in La Rioja lies in the interference of oceanic, Mediterranean, Continental, etc, aspects. The climate varies in relation to the particular physical properties. From cold and damp mountain tops in the Sierra de la Demanda to the warm and dry lands of La Rioja Baja, there are steps of different climatic domains ranging from mountain to continental Mediterranean in the centre of the depression, with all the shadings caused by the closeness to the regulating action of the Atlantic Ocean. Based on the special nature of La Rioja and considering the sets of climate elements, various climate zones have previously been defined, accepting the existence of greater complexity in them and the difficulty of precisely defining their limits since mutual influences overlap with each other.
Once the available data have been optimised, 11 climate areas have been defined, assigning an area of influence to each of the reference weather stations, extrapolating their data to the areas within their radius of action. Suitable corrections must be applied according to the difference in altitude, as specified in the Building Technical Code (BTC).
