The main objective of this paper is to study the differences between work placements and final year projects. Following this research work, the authors explain to what extent the work placement and the final year project contribute to the acquisition of skills by students, and the different amount of dedication required of the teacher.
Finally, and as a consequence of the aspects dealt with, a methodology for the supervision of projects is proposed. This methodology includes a series of guidance documents for the different stages in the development of the project. Those guidelines are intended to aid the teacher in the supervision of the process, as well as providing a more effective guidance to help students reach their goals.
From our point of view, the introduction of the work placement concept constitutes an interesting aspect as it brings new elements to the final year project in the field of
engineering.
