Achieving a city model where users feel safe when they walk around is one of the priorities of road safety. In this sense, many studies have focused on the objective risk of accident, identifying risk situations and their causes in relation to design. However, in addition to this objective component there is a subjective sense of insecurity. This subjective sense of insecurity must be taken into account because it has an emotional and behavioural effect on pedestrians.
The aim of the present work is to analyse this emotional component, using Kansei Engineering techniques. Within the design elements that make up the urban environment, lighting has been selected as a key factor, due to its influence on pedestrian safety and its aesthetic component. For that purpouse, a field study was carried out in which 310 pedestrians assessed in situ the lighting of 18 urban spaces.
The results reflect the emotional response of pedestrians when assessing lighting in urban environments and the importance of this response in the perceived sense of security. These results will allow to improve the city's lighting environments in order to make them more secure.
