The cost associated with the operation and maintenance of the infrastructures represents more than 90% of the life cycle costs, emphasizing that not only the availability of the infrastructures is a relevant aspect for the social progress, but also their quality has a direct impact on the economic and social development of a region. This has led to a boost in maintenance investment over the last few years, giving rise to a growth in the number of contracts for the conservation and maintenance of infrastructures, especially in transport infrastructures, and particularly, on highways. The aim of the communication is to characterize international highway maintenance contracts. After the review of the existing scientific literature and the analysis of contracts from different administrations at international level, this research shows a global classification of this type of contracts, indicating the main differences and similarities between them. The outcomes of this study are very useful for both companies and administrations by providing clarity about the terminologies that have emerged.
