Knowledge, skills and abilities demanded by society from future professionals, have to be considered in the design of higher education current strategies as key factors. This work analyzes the skills acquired by undergraduate Industrial engineering students in the Project Management course, using a project based learning methodology (PBL). It can be said that the implementation of this methodology achieves a significant improvement in the following project management professional skills: success in project management, stakeholders, project organization, scope and deliverables, project phases and timing, and conflicts and crises, among others.
The obtained results from two consecutive years were statistically validated through mean comparison hypotheses tests using the students’ grades at the beginning of the course and at the end of it. Evidence with high statistical significance was found, which shows that there are skills that significantly improved, regardless of the group. It also shows the correspondence with international accreditation systems, and it could be said that the achievement related to the developed skills is applicable not only in the regional context but also in the global one.
