    Abstract
This paper analyzes problematic situations which happen in teaching of methods of planning and project management based on AOA (Activities On Arrows) type networks, it also proposes the introduction of new criteria for an easier understanding and application, and finally compares these methods with the AON type (Activities On Nodes). The study focuses on the criteria that the literature specialized in planning and project management commonly take into account in reference to the application of AOA type networks, and analyzes situations in which its application is insufficient to obtain correct analyses even with simple models. Thus the introduction of additional criteria for the application of these techniques is proposed, as well as the comparison with the type of AON on the basis of practical cases. Besides the intrinsic interest of the developed methodology should be noted that also may be of interest in the field of learning in project planning undergraduate degrees in both the School of Industrial Engineering of the UNED, with distance learning methodology, as in other engineering schools.
