The objective of this communication is to present service design as a key competitive factor for small and medium manufacturing companies. The current context of globalisation and market saturation is leading to the commoditization of goods. In this sense, product service combinations are key differentiation elements for manufacturing companies given their capacity to customize the offering to the customer needs. After a literature review of product service system concepts and design methods, problems found in the early design stages of some ongoing case studies are presented. Finally, the necessity of generating specific methodologies and tolls for the design of hybrid value propositions in small and medium industrial manufacturing enterprises is pointed out.
