The earned value method allows monitoring performance in schedule and costs. Its use for major projects allows us to use objective data about the beginning and end of tasks, which delivers reliable results. But the trend towards increasing package-units and the presence of certain important tasks with high costs, makes it necessary the use of percentage of completed work data. Moreover, the complexity of the organizational structure of the multiproject presents difficulties to the method. To analyze the problems of applicability and appropriateness of its application, a post-mortem study of a major energy sector investment made by a joint venture has been performed. This article presents the findings of work revealing the adequacy of the method as monitoring, the degree of adjustment of the final budget estimates and when approaching sufficiently and the problems posed by the form of engineering work that would be necessary to resolve for their application on future projects.
