The press market in Spain is a mature market where the big publisher companies have grown and conquered the market with a product, the newspaper on paper, whose presence is dwindling in the Spanish global market actually. Publishers are making a strong digital strategy for the future, supporting its decision, the least partially, on the concept of being more environmentally friendly, making the implicit claim that the production and distribution of newsprint are more polluting than homologous digital newspaper operations.
The carbon footprint is the internationally recognized standard tool to measure and compare the pollutant that a product, a service or a process is.
This paper presents the problem of calculating the carbon footprint of a standard Spanish newspaper printed on paper. The difficulty of defining the standard product, the calculation method and the system boundaries are exposed. The applicable legislation is presented and the conflict of the data source used for this calculation is displayed.
