Thermal comfort is an important aspect of residential buildings other than the usual safety and security aspects. However, because of the recent rise of occupant’s expectation for thermal confort level, the operation cost due to energy consumption in the buildings has increased considerably. Typically more tan 80% of total energy consumption occurs during the operation of the buildings and around 20% during construction of the buildings. The standards such as ISO 7730 and ASHRAE 55-2013, which primarily define human thermal comfort conditions, turn out to be a very important factor in deciding the building sustainability. According to ASHRAE 55-2013, thermal comfort is a subjective response and is defined as the ‘state of mind that expresses satisfaction with existing environment’. This definition itself states that a specific value cannot be assigned to thermal comfort. So, the same thermal environment may be perceived differently by different occupants or different occupants may perceive the same thermal comfort level at different thermal environments. In this work, the application of the standards in several buildings with differents uses has been analysed.
