Aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and non-renewable resource dependence, agriculture needs to change its irrigated energy model. In this framework, the integration of renewables emerges as a possible solution for emission reduction and the promotion of local energy resources. A clear example is in the region of La Mancha (Spain), suffering from water scarcity of both surface and ground water. In addition, the relevant demand for fossil fuels that are currently used to pump groundwater from aquifers.
In this scenario, this paper provides technical and geographical data to optimize the implementation of solar pumping installations depending on the type of crop, the water needs and the energy demand. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is proposed as a tool to visualize, represent and analyze geographic data referenced by connecting databases with maps of the study area in order to solve problems of agro-energy planning and management. It is thus a way to facilitate the integration of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse emissions, providing new applications to the GIS tools in the agriculture sector.
