In the field of the waste electrical and electronic equipment management, the preparation for reuse represents the second priority option in the waste hierarchy. In Spain, the recent RD 110/2015 encourages the separate collection of electrical and electronic equipment and promotes their reparation in order to incorporate them to the second-hand markets. In some European countries, the implementation of the preparation for reuse is already far advanced. The repair and second-hand market are well instituted and socially accepted, and do not compete with the first-hand sales. However, in Spain it is still an emerging sector.
The purpose of this communication is to know, through targeted interviews, which are the barriers and best practices identified for the repairing and selling of the second-hand small electrical and electronic equipment by the involved sectors. Furthermore, relevant information about the characteristics of the main devices that are usually repaired and sold is gathered by identifying, inter alia, the most common failures for each equipment and the average time and costs of the reparations.
