Energy storage systems, and batteries in particular, are being more and more studied with the entrance of renewable power sources, distributed generation and smart grids in the generation and distribution of electricity. Thus, the manufacture of batteries and its efficiency in the grid support applications implies an environmental impact that was previously inexistent.
Knowing that electric vehicle batteries can be used on stationary applications when they have lost a 20% of its initial capacity, a study of its environmental impact compared to several other battery technology alternatives will be done. Additionally, a study of the potential benefits that the use of batteries in a distributed generation system against the actual generation, distribution and consumption system will be carried out.
This study will be executed departing from the Spanish electricity MIX, the possible batteries’ use cases in the grid and a battery ageing model developed with Matlab to determine the rest of useful life in the cases analyzed.
