One of the main problems in many cities is the need to rehabilitate or expand their drainage systems. Increasing rainfall intensities , growth and waterproofing of cities causes that original drainage networks became insufficient.
This paper presents an optimization methodology that allow obtaining solutions for drainage networks rehabilitation. This methodology uses EPASWMM as hydraulic modeling analysis of the behavior of the drainage network; and Pseudo-Genetic Algorithm (PGA) as optimization engine. This algorithm has been previously developed for other applications of optimization. This methodology allows to define the best solutions according to a set of cost functions previously defined. Potential solutions are defined by the ducts to be replaced or rehabilitated, and what places would be potentially interesting for the installation of a storm tank and its size.
Finally, the model is applied to solve the problems of one sector of the drainage networks in Bogotá (Colombia). It gets so clear, the ability of the developed methodology to find solutions to flooding problem in urban areas.
