In Galicia (NW Spain), the canning industry is an economic and social cornerstone, with great importance at both national and international spheres. This industry generates a large amount of waste shell, leading to an environmental problem difficult to solve. Particularly, taking into account the amount of generated waste, the key problem in Galicia is the mussel shell. One possibility is the valorization of the shell, turning the waste into a by-product that can be used as construction material. Two deterministic, MIVES-based models for assessing sustainability of two unbound applications are presented in this paper. The first is related to the use of mussel shell as graded aggregate, and the second for using it as soundproofing and thermal insulation material. The model includes the three usual sustainability fields: environmental, social, and economic. The results contribute information for help in the design of sustainable constructions incorporating those materials.
