    Resumen
During de last Spanish recession, and beyond, local administrations in Spain have experienced financial problems in their municipal local budgets, which reveal the possible links between this fact and the urban development patterns previously defined by municipalities. Attending to the previously stated, the hypothesis that public service expenditure is closely linked to the physical structure of cities is taken into account in this study, which means that areas with a high degree of sprawled population and a low degree of residential density will experience financial distress. For this purpose, the impact of urban sprawl on the municipal budgets has been assessed. The aim is to develop an econometric analysis using a panel data set of municipalities of the Spanish Mediterranean, area of study which allows orient public policy in terms of its local land-use decision-making.
