This project proposes and analyzes few-mode propagation optical transmission techniques to increase the transport capacity in optical fiber telecommunications systems. The operation wavelength considered for single-mode fiber (SMF) devices is 850 nm, while 1550 nm is evaluated for devices based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) optical waveguides. These few-mode techniques have been simulated using the commercial software RSOFT BeamPROP. Both multiplexing and demultiplexing schemes have been designed and optimized to achieve maximal conversion and optimum coupling efficiency. According to the analysis results, we propose different schemes for symmetrical and asymmetric couplers, together with a modal filter and a mode multiplexer based on SOI optical waveguides. The proposed modal multiplexing schemes achieved near 100% conversion efficiency which confirms the correct performance of the devices for few-mode optical communications.
