The initial step that any promoter of solar photovoltaic systems must face consists of choosing a suitable location for the installation. To do this, it will be necessary to discard those areas (restrictions) where as a result of the current legislative framework it is not possible to implement this type of technologies. However, when choosing the best site among the suitable locations, an exhaustive analysis of the current state of the territory should be carried out, since each one of the criteria that influence the decision (area, slope, distance to grids, solar radiation, etc.) should be taken into account. Therefore, it will be necessary to solve a multicriteria decision problem consisting in evaluating a large number of alternatives according to a set of criteria. In order to solve this problem, in this paper the combination of a spatial visualization tool such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with the decision methodology ELECTRE-TRI is proposed. In this way, it would be possible to classify the optimal locations through predefined categories. The territory chosen to carry out this study will be the northwest of the Region of Murcia.
