This paper presents the results of a study whose objective was to design and calculate a photovoltaic solar installation independent of the electrical network to meet the needs of a municipal sports centre. One of the primary drawbacks of those systems powered solely by photovoltaic solar energy is that while the goal may be to cover annual electrical needs, an energy deficit is at times inevitable, and this must be corrected by excess energy stored at other times. Two possible alternatives for operation have been examined. The first option attempts to fulfil the total annual electricity needs. And the second seeks only to cover annual lighting needs. Two possible solutions are analysed and compared for each of these options. The first solution consists of a photovoltaic installation run solely on batteries, and the second solution is a photovoltaic installation which has been economically optimised by increasing the number of photovoltaic modules so as to reduce the number of batteries. This study confirms that photovoltaic solar energy represents an adequate alternative to meet the electrical needs of municipal buildings independent of the network, although legal and economic frameworks still must adapt to the current needs of society.
