    Abstract
The use of efficient design parameters in the initial stages of the life cycle of a building project helps to reduce the final energy demand. On the other hand, photovoltaic energy is the renewable resource that has recently undergone the most significant development. Because of its modular structure and its ability to be integrated in the building, photovoltaic energy is one of the renewable resources with the most promising domestic development. To assess the efficacy of this sort of actions, it is necessary the development of assessment tools adapted to sustainable design techniques and new ways of energy supply. In this research, it is proposed an assessment model of the energy demand reduction of residential buildings, by analyzing the building height and the integration of photovoltaic systems to supply a fraction of the energy demand. The results highlight the importance of those dimensional parameters that define optimal building shape from an energy-efficiency perspective. These results are interest to those agents that act on the design process of buildings and urban planning, with the target of reducing the energy consumption in the cities and for promoting the sustainable design of urban areas.
