The leachate quantity generated in a landfill can be managed by an adequate design of the leachate drainage and storage systems. For this reason, in the first place, the factors that determine the leachate generation should be identified, and in the second place, the maximum amount of leachate to be evacuated should be estimated using empirical formulas These forecasts, usually calculated using the Water Balance Method -WBM, require simulation tools developed by complex mathematical formulas that provide measurable results about the generation (HSSWDS, CREAMS, WGEN, SWRRB, HELP, SOILINER, FULLFILL, FILL, BASE). However, these tools do not consider the influence of the time factor on the parameters variation. Therefore, the aim of the present paper is to show a new calculation model to estimate the leachate generation depending on the time factor. This model can be applied in the different stages of the landfill life-cycle (operation and closure) and it is validated using the data of a real landfill with a 52.000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste - MSW input.
