Many products around us are conceived to fulfill functions that sometimes do not adapt to the future needs of users. To give an answer to this, products such as Phoneblocks, a modular smartphone that attempts to adapt to the users’ changing needs, have appeared. This communication sets out a methodological development to conceptualize a new product, in this case, a seat for hotel establishments, which adapts to two usage scenarios: restaurant area and conference rooms. To afford the following steps are proposed: an analysis and selection of usage scenarios is done, an identification of a reference product for each scenario and a convergence map to identify the common functions among the scenarios to check the compatibility among them. Then, creative techniques are applied to obtain a new concept that combines as many of the stablished functions. The new concept is compared with the reference existing products in terms of number of functions and frequency and time of use. Finally, the saving of materials and costs of the proposed concept is qualitatively estimated.
