The construction sector, in general, and the building sub-sector, in particular, have been classified as non-innovative and too traditional. In other sectors related to the manufacturing industry, at the end of last century, innovative concepts emerged such as quality assurance, lean production, critical chain, earned value, value stream mapping, etc. Furthermore, in Anglo-Saxon countries, new techniques and methods have been appearing and developing, such as last planner system, building information modeling or integrated project delivery, specifically designed for construction. Considering this scenario, this paper presents an exploratory research on the current knowledge and the future training expectations of professionals working in the Spanish building sub-sector regarding these innovative approaches. This research is based on a survey of more than four hundred technical architects throughout Spain. From the analysis of the results new practical recommendations are proposed on training in these novel approaches aiming to improve competitiveness and productivity in the Spanish building sub-sector.
