The Spanish Structural Concrete Code (EHE-08) has been a pioneer experience in the international arena, establishing a model for assessing sustainability. After years of applying and analyzing that model, the authors have detected some problems, as well as potential improvements to carry out. At present, the Spanish Ministry of Public Works is working to generate a new Structural Code adapted to the Eurocodes. The new Spanish Code will include supplementary documents for dealing with the topics not covered by the Eurocodes. This will be the case of sustainability assessment. This paper will present different proposals for avoiding the alluded problems and achieving a more rigorous assessment model.
