La Palma Island has been listed as a biosphere reserve since 2002. Thanks to its abundant renewable natural resources (wind, solar radiation, etc.) and its excessive external energy dependence, it is postulated as a suitable candidate to promote the implantation of renewable energy facilities.
The aim of this study is to analyze in depth this island with the aim of determining the areas in which, as a consequence of the current legislative framework, it is not possible to implement onshore wind farms. The application of spatial representation computer tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows to solve this arduous task with extraordinary simplicity and efficiency. In addition, when selecting which are the optimal locations, a thorough analysis of the current state of the territory and the existing facilities will have to be carried out taking into account all the criteria that may influence the decision, thus constituting a decision problem Multi-criteria.
In this article we propose to combine a GIS tool with multi-criteria analysis with the aim of selecting the optimal locations to implement onshore wind farms on the La Palma Island.
