In the field of wind power, the Weibull distribution is often used to describe wind speed, both on land and sea. However, such a distribution is not a general law, which can lead to considerable deviations in the energy calculation of wind turbines.
Therefore, the advantages of a two-parameter probability density function such as the Weibull distribution vanish when it does not represent the wind speed at a site.
The objective of this paper is to determine the distribution of Weibull under open sea conditions from the meteorological data obtained in the German research platform FINO3 and in buoys of the American National Data Bouy Center in different latitudes of the hemisphere North, and verify their adjustment with respect to the histograms of wind speeds. In this way, it will be possible to study the importance of the deviations of the energy production of the wind turbines.
