Since prehistory, the technological evolution of the machining industry has been based on the trinomial tool-machine-man. Nowadays, the machine tool industry has been developed towards CNC equipment where human intervention continues to be main. So much so that without this intervention it is not possible to optimize the machining processes.
Traditionally, the initial study of the behavior of materials and the mechanisms of chip formation of a given material has been carried out with simple cutting equipment as close as possible to an orthogonal cut. However, industrial equipment such as shaper machines, ideal for these studies are in disuse or do not allow an exhaustive control of the process, therefore, this paper presents the design of a portable orthogonal cutting machine, which will perform an alternative linear movement, similar to an industrial shaper machine. This machine will have a reduced size so that it can be transported and used both in the laboratory and in the classroom, as support for teaching. Also, this machine has a pivoting tool holder to expand the possibilities of use.
