Present paper exposes a methodology to incorporate carbon footprint calculation in urban planning process. Methodology is aligned with available information in the urban planning phase and allows defining preventive measurements based on, for example, land classification, land uses, edificability indexes or system infrastructures and dotational facilities. Using developed methodology for residential land use, general scope is defined, sources are identified and greenhouse gas emissions are calculated amounting to 6.609 tCO2eq/year. A set of 31 municipalities in Madrid have been analyzed quantifying its greenhouse gas emissions which vary between 165.23 and 147,543.32 tCO2eq/year. Relations between carbon footprint and urban design variables are also studied as well as non developable surface (ha) required for every developable one (ha) resulting from 3.18 to 24.55 ratios to ensure complete carbon capture. Keywords: greenhouse gas; carbon footprint; diffuse emissions; urban planning
