The Spanish dependency on energy imports is approximately 80% of the total country requirement, being the homes consumption quite significant (around 20%). Nowadays, this dependency represents one of the most important problems; therefore, it is necessary to reduce homes energy consumption and to satisfy the energy requirements by means of alternative energy sources. It is well known that a well insulated building uses less energy as it keeps its internal temperature. For this reason, this work is firstly based on reducing the potential energy use in homes by analyzing and selecting more efficient insulating materials and secondly on estimating the biomass fuel as an energy source to satisfy the energy requirements. Therefore, LABEFFICIENCY.14 is an innovative tool that offers the possibility of analysing different types of insulating materials, indicating the most suitable ones and calculating (according to the selected material) the quantity of the necessary biomass fuel. The tool also offers graphical results. Moreover, in the case of buildings with a vegetable garden, forest or crops, depending on the type of biomass fuel, this tool indicates the green area needed to cover the final thermal requirements values.
