Traditional numerical schemes are frequently used in computing hydrodynamic models for simple problems. In general, the numerical results converge to the solution without significant errors. The particular case of a dam break provokes discontinuities in the solution which can not be approximated by the traditional methods properly. Therefore, high-order accuracy numerical schemes are required. This paper conducts a comparative analysis of explicit and implicit numerical schemes using finite difference discretization and the "shock-capturing methods", higher order methods based on finite volumes. The adjustment results to the analytical solution, represented by the RMS against variables such as the Courant number and computational time-cost, allow to distinguish between the most efficient and effective schemes. This being so, it follows that the methods based on finite volumes discretization reach a higher degree of fit of the analytical solution and a better balanced state between the RMS and the computational time-cost. Keywords: Saint-Venant equations; Numerical schemes; Finite volume method; Dam-break flow.
