Due to the increase in the energy consumption in the building sector, it is necessary to establish energy conservation measures that improve energy efficiency in buildings. Standardizing these measures can help to reduce some efforts. However, given the wide variety of existing buildings, it would be very useful to characterize the existing building stock in building typologies, which were representative of the overall stock in a particular urban environment. Within this context, this paper proposes a methodology for characterization of the existing building stock that could be the basis for their energy assessment. To tackle this, a previous literature review on the different existing methodologies is provided, to identify the most significant aspects in the energy performance of a building, which will contribute to develop the methodology. Finally, to validate the methodology, it is applied to an urban area, and it is identified the most relevant building typologies, construction and energy aspects that define them. Furthermore, the application of this methodology will allow performing the energy analysis of the sample buildings, as most representative, and then extrapolating the results on energy consumption on a larger scale, as a neighborhood, city or region. Keywords: Building typology; existing buildings; characterization methodology; energy efficiency
