Until the eighteenth century, the Spanish engineering, as well as the European, sunk its roots in empiricism and its processes of training was by translating the knowledge of senior engineers to apprentices, similar to the guild corporations.
The situation at the beginning of the eighteenth century with the change of the royal dynasty is of absolute necessity for engineers, manifested through the demands of the armies.
The start-up of formal training in engineering, has its origin in three events.
• 1711 the publication of a Royal Decree that is considered as the creation of the Corps of Engineers.in Spain
• 1718 the publication of the Royal Ordinance for "Engineers, and other persons". In this ordinance is established on the side of demand, the King in this case, the need for formal training of engineers.
• 1720 the creation of the Academy of Mathematics of Barcelona for the formal training of military engineers.
This creation obliges to carry out the project of a plan of studies, as well as, of a model of management. This project lasts until the year 1803 and will be the first stage of the formal formation of the Spanish engineering.
