The paper shows the engineering phase development applied to product design within an R&D&I project in an academic environment. The objective of this work was to acquire skills related to an innovative product development based on Product Engineering and R&D&I Project Management. Accomplishment of the set objectives was ensured by dividing the work into three different parts. Firstly, the State of the Art and an appropriate scientific-technological contextualisation of problems surrounding operating theatre luminaires were carried out. Subsequently, the Management Plan for this R&D&I project was developed regarding this innovative product design. Finally, a design and three-dimensional modelling of an articulated operating room luminaire technical project was supported by the Product Engineering guidelines. It was concluded that undertaking this kind of transdisciplinary projects in multidisciplinary engineering teams provides students with job niches with enormous professional projection in very short term.
