The ecodesign of products is a crucial factor in the Community strategy on Integrated Product Policy. Then, a wide range of techniques have been developed to evaluate the
environmental performance of products. However, the integration of environmental aspects into the early stages of the design process and development of products together with a multi-criteria approach that makes it possible to balance the environmental requirement against other traditional requirements are two of the key aspects for successful sustainable production. This communication reviews design methodologies that have been developed to integrate environmental requirements into the design process. A classification was made according to features such as the technique utilised to assess the environmental aspect, the traditional requirements that are taken into account in addition to the environmental characteristics, the traditional design methodology used as a reference or whether these methodologies have been put to practical use.
